Welcome to Derry Series Plot and Storyline
The series It: Welcome to Derry takes us back to the seemingly peaceful town of Maine, Derry in 1962, laying the foundation for what terror happens in Stephen King’s world. The narrative focuses on the Hanlon family— and Major Leroy Hanlon, his wife Charlotte, and their young son Will— who arrive in town due to Leroy’s new assignment at the nearby Air Force base. But their new beginning is no sooner started than it is jolted by the vanishing of a village boy, Matty Clements. As the new family finds a settling-in period, they also learn that Derry isn’t like other towns; it’s a place where something ominous lurks just beneath the surface and has for decades – a town whose history is defined by repressed horror and unsolved violence.

As the adults and children begin to feel the town’s oppressive atmosphere, the mystery starts to unravel. Major Hanlon begins to uncover strange secrets and hidden agendas at the military base, while a group of local children, including the visionary Lilly and the sharp Ronnie, start having disturbing visions and hearing voices from the sewers. They realize that Matty’s disappearance is not an isolated incident but part of a destructive, recurring cycle in Derry’s history. This tension is heightened by the systemic racism the Hanlon family faces in the small, insular community, providing the perfect cover for a much greater, ancient evil to prey on the town’s most vulnerable.
This ancient evil soon manifests as the iconic, terrifying entity, Pennywise the Dancing Clown. What begins as a community investigation turns into a desperate fight for survival as Pennywise begins his horrific feeding cycle, exploiting the deepest fears of both the Hanlon family and the group of children. The series shows how the sinister clown’s influence corrupts the town, forcing the protagonists to confront not only the creature but also Derry’s own history of denial and complicity. Ultimately, the Hanlons are pulled deep into the battle against Pennywise, setting the tragic groundwork for the future events that will eventually involve Mike Hanlon, a future member of the Losers’ Club.
